1920's Inspired Kitchen Island

Our kitchen island which I built from reclaimed material 15 years ago was in need of a make over. New coat of paint and it needed a shelf added.

Rather then redo a project I've done before I set to designing a new kitchen island. I had a fair amount of reclaimed Fir from past renos stored up and knew that lumber would be perfect for this project.

-
Tongue and grove fir flooring from a 1912 Edwardian house
-
Stair treads and stair case spindles from a 1928 Arts and Craft house
-
As well, I re-purposed the original island's top

Using the age of the wood as inspiration, I designed the island with the theme of early 1900's. The side panels are hand carved with a miniature Indian Rasp and a straight edge then treated with a steel wool vinegar stain. The carving is a period correct design of the age which one would find in Art Deco décor.

I knew this would be a challenge as I've not built furniture quality in years but I like a good challenge and as I'm in isolation I had plenty of time. I started this project in late October 2020 and finished in January 2021. Not sure how many hours total, but a lot.

For those interest, there's also a YouTube video which shows the progress of the build from the beginning, as potential firewood to what you see below.
