Inset Crown Stained Glass Lamp

One of my favorite stained glass art projects started with a roadside salvage during a casual dog walk when I came across an old, unattractive lamp adorned with cherubs and acrylic plastic. Though not appealing at first glance, its cast metal base had potential, so I brought it home to give it a new life. This salvage find became the foundation for my first design project for a custom stained glass lamp.

For the lamp's base, I used African Mahogany and Black Walnut and did a complete rewire. The real challenge came in designing and building the lamp's shade, which took over 50 hours to complete. After numerous cardboard mockups, I settled on the final shape, which required me to build a custom form to hold the glass in its unique curve while soldering. This technique, paired with the copper patina finish, helped me craft a truly one-of-a-kind piece. The lamp shade includes 424 individual pieces of glass, each carefully placed to complement the curved design.

Standing 26" tall with a 10" square shade at the top, this DIY stained glass project was displayed at the 2019 Sooke Fine Arts Show. It’s a perfect example of combining upcycled materials with stained glass lights techniques to create something both beautiful and functional.
