"A Hummingbird's Tear"
This stained glass art piece, "A Hummingbird's Tear," is a fusion of elements from a couple of previous projects.

In 2014, I designed a tear-drop-shaped hummingbird in memory of my brother, using custom glass cutting techniques. It quickly became one of my favorite designs, and I knew I’d revisit and reimagine it someday.
In 2023, I created a commissioned suncatcher with Celtic rope designs held in a steam-bent wood cradle. Both elements inspired future projects. Combining these elements, I designed and built this unique piece, merging the DIY stained glass and wood art techniques I’ve honed over the years.
The hummingbird is modeled after a Sparkling Violetear Hummingbird, with iridescent glass for the wings to mimic the blurred movement during flight. The body features a blend of green and purple glass, while the clear wavy glass around it represents the wind.
The Celtic rope design is made with blue and green, irregularly textured, bubbly glass. For the backing, I used ripple iridescent glass, which creates a jewel-like effect when sunlight catches it just right.
The wooden cradle is crafted using steam-bent wood techniques, an 8-layer lamination of African Mahogany and Red Cedar. The wood is finished with three coats of Tung Oil and two coats of paste wax for a rich finish.
To complete the design, I used a 1/8" leather cording for the hanger, tied with a Clove hitch knot and bound with UV-resistant thread, protected by clear lacquer to prevent fraying.
Including the wooden frame, this piece measures 15.5" x 17" and took about 40 hours to complete, showcasing the fusion of glass design ideas and woodworking techniques.
